Through her own story she makes a powerful, passionate argument for rethinking a fair, equal society where there is no place for state violence and racial repression. Through Harvard Law School she comes to see that that solution can be found not just in the debate on better policing but the end of the policing itself. She describes her political awakening and activism through watching the aftermaths of events including Hurricane Katrina, the murder of Trayvon Martin and the uprising in her hometown of Ferguson following the death of Michael Brown. Louis, where she was often unhoused and experienced food insecurity, and where calling 911 was often the only option in a crisis. Writing what you know is good advice, but you also must understand what you know in order to write well. Many writing experts advise, “write what you know.” Do you agree with this? And what practical advice would you give an aspiring author? The idea of writing a book that would be both a biography of my two deaf parents, and a memoir, was my first inspiration, but until I thought of the title, Hands of My Father, I didn’t know how to begin. Which came first: the idea for the book, the title, or a passage from the book? While drinking anisette with Ernest Hemingway: “Papa, why did you do it?” Who is it, and what would you ask that author if you only got to ask him one question? Colin does not make it apparent that he has feelings for Summer, so Summer decides to take a chance with Hunter. For instance, Hunter, one of her other roommates, has a crush on her. Throughout the story, Summer suffers from a lot of insecurities and this plays a part in how she made her decisions. I also really loved this book because of how much I related to Summer. This push and pull made the story very interesting and pushed me to continue to read the book. Then there are other times where both Colin and Summer cause a digression in their relationship. There are times where they help each other out and progress their relationship further. One of my favorite aspects of the book was the constant push and pull and the slow burn between the two characters. As someone whose favorite genre of books is realistic fiction and as someone who also loves romantic books, I enjoyed The Chase. The Chase by Elle Kennedy is about a wealthy college student, Summer Heyward-Di Laurentis, and her life living with her crush, Colin Fitzgerald. By volume alone – 12 novels, two short story collections, two children’s books, four original screenplays, a play, an operetta and a libretto – he far outshines many of his contemporaries. There are few writers who’ve shaped the future of the modern British novel as dramatically as Ian McEwan.
